Updated: Jan 8

Industry Insights by Level Up Development

Overview

In this edition of Industry Insights, DJ and record producer Marc B covers the essentials of crafting your own lane as a DJ, highlighting the importance of DJs recognizing their value and power within the music industry. As Marc B puts it, respecting the history and community of DJing is crucial for personal growth.

Knowing one's energy and staying true to oneself prevents self-sabotage. Additionally, understandig one's value allows for genuine relationships and financial stability. Patience and persistence are essential for long-term success, as recognition and opportunities may not come immediately. Marc B stresses that DJs should avoid being pigeonholed and instead focus on their unique strengths and growth.

What Is Industry Insights?

Industry Insights is a content series providing step-by-step approaches to practically addressing professional objectives. In this series, industry professionals break down their approach to effectively tackling relatable professional objectives in a few steps.

The Approach

Opening

Marc B: I want all DJs to realize their power, because we are important in every aspect of what we do, from the clubs to the concerts to the stage. Once we realize our importance and realize what we bring to the stage, we're able to capitalize on it 1,000% more. In this release, I want to go over the important aspects of what being a DJ is.

Step 1: Respect The Craft

Marc B: The first step into making your own lane as a DJ is respecting the craft. I think when I was coming up as a DJ, it was about learning why I really wanted to do it. It was about being involved in music, knowing how I wanted to really go at it. There really wasn't any path to it. And I think that was the start.

Marc B: I was passionate about it. I was inspired by going to clubs and looking at other DJs. It took research. It took me seeing what all the things mean: what the computer means, how people scratch, how people do this and that. I think that allowed me to be where I'm at today.

Marc B: I think respecting the people that was before me and respecting the people that was behind me, and just being interested in music. I think that's just what you have to do. That's the first step.

Step 2: Know Yourself

Marc B: Step Two of making your own lane as a DJ is knowing yourself. It's being yourself and knowing the energy you want to put out. Every DJ has different aspects of themselves that allows them to be in different fields.

Marc B: If you're too in search of another lane or another goal, or seeing other people, it clouds your judgment. I think a lot of the times I could have played myself out the streets or played myself out of opportunities because I was moving too fast, or because I would be in my own way.

Marc B: Knowing yourself is a key to being the person you want to be and having everybody around you in a genuine space.

Step 3: Know Your Value

Marc B: Step three is knowing your value. A lot of times when we're building from the ground up, it takes us a little minute to learn what we input on a situation. But once we get to a certain point, we have to know, because that gets us money.

Marc B: That allows us to put some bread in our pocket and feed our family; To learn how to move the way we need to. Knowing your value allows you to build those genuine relationships that's forever.

Step 4: Be Patient and Persistent

Marc B: Step four is being patient and being persistent. Everything is a learning opportunity for you to grow, for you to build, and for you to expand.

Marc B: Sometimes as a DJ, we're not always quick to get the bag. We're not always quick to be recognized. We're always not quick for somebody to see the opportunities that we're able to provide.

Marc B: We can't be stuck and give up after the first time somebody doesn't mess with us, after the first time an artists doesn't take us on tour after, or after the first time somebody doesn't look us like "oh, you're the greatest."

Marc B: Allowing yourself to elevate and allowing yourself to build is the biggest thing. To take time for our vision to expand and allow it to grow into what it needs to be.

Marc B: Being persistent with knowing where you're at allows you to build and go where you need to go

Closing

Marc B: All those things are important because they don't allow a DJ to be put in a box. There's all these things that I could say a DJ should be good at: knowing what to play, knowing how to scratch, but I feel like none of those things are that important because everyone is their own self.

Marc B: Knowing who you know, is different from somebody who just likes to DJ at their house with their friends, and I feel like they shouldn't be compared. All those things that I said, allows you to be yourself and to flourish...and not be stressed by other opportunities that may arise with somebody else.
